Reflections on the VDC Teaching & Learning Conference
- ‘the science of learning Strategy
- enhancing Teaching with technology
- engineering student Engagement
- developing the art of Assessment
- Managing with mathematical precision.’
The Opening Keynote Presentation was delivered by Dr Mark Strom whose background is across a number of sectors including primary, secondary and tertiary education. His session was titled ‘Decoding innovation and design (and how to make both happen)’. The main message that he communicated can be summed up in the line ‘Keep Calm and Share Best Practice’. At Trinity College, we are already doing this and if nothing else, those who attended the Trinity College Inaugural eLearning Conference can certainly vouch for this as the conversations have not stopped since this event took place.
Other sessions focussed on the themes of enhancing teaching with technology and increasing student engagement in the classroom.
In one of the other sessions we were introduced to a variety of Apps and we discussed how we could incorporate these into our lessons to promote student engagement and interaction. During this session we workshopped “App Smashing”, a technique that combines multiple Apps to achieve a learning objective, whereby each App supports a different stage in the learning process.

Upon reflecting on this conference and looking at our Professional Development Program, it is obvious that we are certainly keeping up with the latest pedagogy and that we are truly moving ‘full steam ahead’ when it comes to introducing ideas and activities that require our students to collaborate and engage with the course content as well as with each other.
